How Radiant Heat Moves Through An Attic

Heat moves by conduction, convection, and radiation. Standard insulation mainly slows conductive and convective heat movement, while radiant heat travels from a hot surface toward a cooler surface across open space.

On a summer afternoon, the underside of a roof can radiate heat toward ducts, insulation, framing, and the ceiling below. A properly placed reflective surface intercepts part of that radiant load at the roofline.

Where A Radiant Barrier Is Installed

In many existing homes, radiant barrier foil is fastened to the underside of rafters with the reflective face aimed toward the attic floor. In new construction, some assemblies use radiant barrier roof sheathing or material installed before decking.

Placement matters because the barrier needs to face open air to reflect radiant energy. Attics with ductwork, finished garage ceilings, workshops, and metal buildings are common places to discuss whether this layer makes sense.

Why The Reflective Surface Needs An Air Gap

A radiant barrier needs an adjacent air space to do its job. If foil is pressed tight against another material or buried under insulation, heat can conduct through it and the reflective benefit is reduced.

Dust matters too. Foil laid flat over attic insulation can collect dust on the reflective face. Rafter-mounted layouts keep the working surface pointed downward, which helps preserve the condition of that face over time.

A Complement To Insulation, Not A Substitute

Radiant barriers and insulation handle different parts of the heat problem. The barrier works at the roofline, while attic insulation slows heat that still moves toward the living space below.

What To Expect In Arizona Conditions

A correctly installed radiant barrier can reduce the amount of radiant roof heat that reaches the attic floor and duct area. Actual results depend on roof color, orientation, shading, ventilation, existing insulation, and how the attic is configured.

A barrier does not stop air leaks, does not add meaningful R-value by itself, and does not correct poor ventilation or equipment sizing. It works best when it is chosen for the right attic and installed as part of a balanced plan.
